January 10, 2011

This week, we highlight The Candler Oak Tree, located on Drayton Street just south of Gaston Street.

The Candler Oak is a Live Oak tree estimated to be over 300 years old, making it one of the oldest living Live Oak trees in Savannah. The tree was designated a Georgia Landmark and Historic Tree by the Georgia Urban Forest Council in 2001. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Trees in 2004.

The tree is currently maintained by the Savannah Tree Foundation, which was founded to protect and preserve the urban forest in Savannah.
Getting to The Candler Oak from the Catherine Ward House Inn by foot is extremely easy. From door to door, it takes as little as 4 minutes to walk between the two.
